Buddhist teachings can be looked at in several ways.  On the superior level arises the aim of experiencing the joy and peace of a higher consciousness.  Higher still is the desire to achieve the ultimate goal with a direct mental liberation.  Buddhists believe that mental liberation is the total destruction of ignorance and desire which can be attained by developing insight and awareness through the practice of meditation.

There is the situation of the man in the street who is concerned with life in the world with the senses, and takes a real fancy to #marriage.  Buddhist view on #marriage does not obligate a person to marry or stay single; rather, the openness of #Buddhism leaves the decision to the individual.

At the mundane level, #marriage can be looked at being beneficial.  It enhances spiritual #growth, encourages exploration and connectivity.  Through communication, tolerance, and understanding, religion and #spirituality tend to enrich the faiths of both individuals and are an integral part of a healthy marriage.

Taking an example of a couple that a husband is interested in #Buddhism in terms of an intellectual perspective; while his spouse is interested in #Buddhism in terms of a spiritual dimension.  His spiritual #growth is inspired by her effort of practice which emphasizes self-knowledge, and being calm and mindful in everyday life.  Her faith is enriched and enhanced by his intellectual view and analytical vision.

Their sharing of differing approaches on #spirituality leads to a #growth in their moral standard from where they are on the spiritual path and strive to deepen their own practice and understanding further.

More different examples demonstrate how #marriage is beneficial rather than being detrimental to an individual’s spiritual #growth.  In an age of increasing religious #diversity and pluralism, more people are likely to engage in an #interreligious relationship today than ever before.  #Interreligious #marriages can be a tremendous learning opportunity.  It fosters cross-learning and helps the couple grow spiritually.

Compromising, giving a little to take a little is the popular approach most workable to any #interreligious family in terms of exploring to understand each other faith.  Making the commitment to understanding one another is the driving force in the religious dialogue within the #interfaith family.  Definitely, there are going to be conflicts.  However, such conflicts will give the opportunity to sit down and discuss. To bridge the gaps, it requires the same core themes of balance and appreciation from both sides, and a sense of tolerance for each other to look for shared ground and commonality.  Then finding a comfort zone of mutual #growth.  By this way, it makes the differences in path strengthen a bond instead of weaken it, and build upon each other a source for unity and family #growth at a whole.

Opening up to understand the spouse’s religion does not mean embracing it to oneself or to convert.  Instead, it means holding one’s ground, being flexible with some things, but do not lose sight of who one is or where one comes from.  There is no part of multiculturalism that wants a person to let go of one’s background.  Instead, opening up to understand the spouse’s belief broaden the wisdom and increases the faith in the person himself in the way that transcends the belief system to truly see the universal benefit of religion.

#Buddhism itself is a very open religion.  It provides different ways to look at the same issue.  That is beautiful because that is what permits Buddhists to be openhearted about other religions.  In handling with #interreligious conversation, Buddhists understand that a strong back and a soft front are needed to keep themselves grounded in their values and their ethics while exchanging ideas and attitudes.  Living by vows and ethics reflects the capacity for insight and the ability to manifest moral nerve to deal with issues of harm, and the courage to stand in principles of non-harming, and nonviolence.  It is a foundation for holding an #interreligious conversation without verbal and physical aggressiveness.

Buddhist ethic is designed for ordinary man who is intended both to be beneficial in its own right and help individual to reflect the ability to be guided by equanimity, compassion, the arisen moral nerve and moral sensitivity in the direction of the higher level of peace and joy, and mental liberation.  This is the profundity of #Buddhism.  Without it, #Buddhism is reduced to just another self-help system that, while being helpful, only addresses living sufferings, and lessens the symptoms of mental stress and illness.  It is practice and #open-mindedness that gives #Buddhism its integrity, ensures its benefit to humankind, and fosters the harmonious #interreligious existence.  With both practice and #open-mindedness, #Buddhism will never be seen out of date in the world of increasing religious #diversity.
